The Sloate Media Center is pleased to present a one-day, hands-on workshop exploring how generative AI is shaping storytelling and media production. Led by NYU Tisch Assistant Arts Professor David Poyner, this session will introduce key concepts such as large language and diffusion models, and guide participants through the creative process of developing pre-production for short films. Students will use tools like Google Gemini and Adobe Firefly to create a storyboard and lookbook, experimenting with AI-assisted world building and visual development.
A storyboard and a lookbook are parts of the pre-production process for (many but not all) films. Both help communicate to a production crew what the visuals and aesthetics of the film are, ranging from the shot list to the lighting, set design, costumes, and so forth. A storyboard is a sequence of illustrated or sketched panels arranged to map out the visual flow of a narrative. A lookbook is a curated collection of images assembled to show a style or aesthetic to communicate a mood or vision, like a visual portfolio.
Selected participants (approximately 10) will receive a $200 stipend for attendance. Barnard students from all majors are encouraged to apply, and no prior experience with either media production or AI is required. Apply here! Deadline to apply is April 22nd, 2026.
