Community Agreements
The Media Center spaces (the Post-Production Lab and Media Production Studio on the first floor of Milstein, and the Media Equipment Room on the second floor of Milstein) are designed to support creativity, learning, and collaboration in a welcoming shared environment.
- Our spaces are meant to be accessible and open regardless of skill level or physical ability.
- Priority for these spaces and equipment is given to currently enrolled undergraduate students.
- Priority for these spaces and equipment is given to users who are working on media projects.
Please notify Media Center staff if equipment or software is not working properly or needs attention. If there is not a Media Center staff member in the space, email mediacenter@barnard.edu.
Post-Production Lab
Usage
Please save your work on a personal hard drive as computers are wiped on a weekly basis.
During high-traffic times (end of semester) please refrain from ‘claiming’ a workstation to hold while you are not actively working in the space.
All accessories (cables, headphones, card readers, etc) must remain in the room. If you need to unplug or move something, please return the station to its original configuration when you are finished.
This lab is open whenever the building is open. You are welcome to be here unless the room is reserved for a class. You can find a weekly lab schedule posted on the front door of the lab.
Atmosphere
The post-production lab is meant to be a quiet space for working, studying, research, collaboration, and consultations.
Please use headphones, refrain from taking phone calls, and keep conversations at a low to normal volume.
Food is only permitted in the designated food zone and drinks must be in sealed containers.
Users are welcome to lower the window shades if sunlight glare presents a visibility issue on the computer screens.
Media Production Studio
Usage
Arrive on time to your reservation. The Production Studio has a 10 minute grace period, after that your reservation will automatically be cancelled. If you are running late please email your reservation point-person and the Media Center(mediacenter@barnard.edu).
You are not permitted to take equipment outside of the studio.
Do not remove or rearrange the lights on the overhead grid.
Seamless setup and breakdown requires a minimum of two people, please connect with your point-person/s if you need help.
Keep electrical boxes closed.
Do not use a ladder without a spotter.
Smoke machines and open flames are not permitted.
If you do not know how to use a piece of equipment, please contact your reservation point-person and they will help you.
Please cut and place used seamless in the trash bin.
If applicable, make sure all knobs on C Stand are tightened before, during and after use.
Please start cleaning up and breaking down 15-20 minutes before your reservation end time, going over your reserved time can result in a probation and a complete studio ban if done more than once.
Care
Food is not permitted in the studio unless it is being used as a photo prop and you must inform Media Center staff when you make a reservation. Drinks must be in sealed containers.
Ensure to keep a clear path in case of an emergency.
Please clean up after yourself, a broom, swiffer and other cleaning supplies are available to clean up any debris or mess made during your reservation.
Once you are finished, please return equipment and accessories to their designated space in the configuration you found them.

Care
The equipment room is staffed by student employees and managed by full-time Media Center staff, please be respectful when corresponding and interacting with our staff. Repeated mistreatment of staff may result in patron accounts being placed on temporary or permanent hold.
Missing or damaged equipment will result in a hold on your account.
Usage
You may have only one standing reservation or checkout at a time. You must return any equipment currently checked out before you can make a reservation for your next checkout.
The Media Center Equipment Room(MER) does not administer fees or fines for late equipment returns. However, we may restrict a patron’s account for up to a week for each day that a checkout is late. If equipment is more than a week overdue, patrons may be banned from checkouts for the remainder of the semester.
MER expects patrons to adhere to the following guidelines to protect equipment:
- Patrons can check out a maximum of 1 camera per reservation.
- Patrons can check out a maximum of 1 light kit per reservation.
- For all other equipment, patrons can only check out a maximum of 2 of any one item per reservation.
- Please familiarize yourself with each piece of equipment, its function, and all of its components. You can find printed manuals in the equipment case or digital versions on the manufacturer’s website.
- Please do not take IMATS equipment to wet, sandy, or dusty locations.
- Please do not take IMATS equipment with you on a plane, or to anywhere that you won’t be able to return.
- Please do not leave IMATS equipment unattended, even for a brief period of time.
- Please store IMATS equipment away from pets and children
Atmosphere
The Media Equipment Room is located in a shared work area for students and staff, in an atrium between the Milstein elevator bank, B staircase, and staff offices. Please maintain a clear walkway for others to access the elevators, staircase, and offices. Please be respectful of the furniture and keep the atrium clean and neat for everyone to use. The atrium is not intended to be a quiet study space, but please be mindful of noise so as not to interrupt nearby study spaces and offices. Please do not take phone or video calls/meetings/classes in the atrium.
